Registration of Immigrants and Residents with the Tax DepartmentSome immigrants will need to register with the Panamanian Tax Department in order to complete their permanent residency application (a Certificate of Good Standing from the Tax Department is required, which can only be issued to those which are registered and up to date in the payment of taxes). For example, holders of the following visas: Self-Employed persons, Solvencia Económica Propia (Personal Income) and Work-Permit. Some of these persons will have to present tax returns to the Panamanian government. . Other residents or immigrants living in Panama will need to register with the tax department, as property owners. This is particularly important for Pensionados (holders of the Pensioner Visa) who wish to apply for the Tax Suspension (Freezing or congelación) on their real estate taxes. In order to apply for this, the owner must first be registered with the tax department. If you have not registered with the tax department, and are selling a property which you own in your personal name, it will be necessary to register you in order to pay the land transfer tax. For more information regarding registration with the Panamanian Tax Department, please do not hesitate to contact us.
