Driver's License

Obtaining a Driver's License in Panama is not all that difficult, if you already have your residency and a driver's license issued by another country.

If your residency is for one year, then your driver's license will also be issued for one year.  If you have permanent residency, such as a Pensioner Visa, you will be able to get a 4-year driver's license issued.

Documentation required:

  1. Your Permanent Residency Card, and a photocopy of it;
  2. Your foreign driver's license (with a copy duly authenticated by your Consulate here in Panama, which then needs to be taken to the office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Plaza Edison, for them to certify the signature of the Consul);
  3. $20.25;
  4. Blood type test (this information will be included on your driver's license);
  5. Medical test (if 70 years or oler).

Where to go:

It is now possible to go to the Driver's License centre in Albrook.  This is known as SERTRACEN (Servicio de Emisión de Licencia de Conducir).  Their website is www.sertracen.com.pa.

It is also still possible to get your driver's license in the Traffic Department out in Juan Diaz.  This is close to the International Airport (Tocumen).  You should expect that you will take up to 2-3 hours to get through the process, depending on the number of people that are there before you are.

Our law firm does not usually assist clients directly with this application, but rather we will recommend third parties who can guide you through the process.  Please ask about their fees.

If you speak Spanish fluently, then there is no reason why you cannot go on your own to do this.
