Types of Last Wills and Testaments recognised by the Civil Code

The Civil Code divides Wills under the following headings:

bulletCommon: May be hand-written, open or closed
bulletSpecialMaritime, Military and Overseas

Common Wills

Hand-written Wills

A hand-written will is obviously, as its name states, hand-written by the Testator himself, according to the formalities of the Civil Code.

Open Wills

An open will is one in which the Testator expresses his last will in front of witnesses and a Notary Public, who then are aware of what his wishes are.  The formalities for this will are described under Formalities of Making a Last Will & Testament in Panama.

Closed Wills

A closed will is one in which the Testator reveals to the witnesses that this is his Last Will and Testament, without disclosing the contents thereof.

Special Wills

Maritime Wills

Military Wills

Wills made Overseas
